Captain David presents Nigel Underwood with the Bailiff Shield
It's a long day for our Competition Secretary Nigel Underwood. Normally he puts himself out first and sits patiently in the clubhouse checking cards and waiting for a winner to emerge.
But the day of the Bailiff Shield was a little different. On this occasion Nigel came in with an amazing round of nett 63. His card included birdies on the Carthagena 4th, 6th and 8th.
He waited ... and waited ... and waited. But no one could beat his performance.
It had been a testing day on the course with later starters getting the worst of the rain. Even Nigel admitted that the weather gods had been kind to him.
But that did not detract from an outstanding performance which landed him the Bailiff Shield presented by Seniors Captain David Barlow.
Runner up on nett 65 was David List and in third place was David Gabbitas on nett 67.
Running alongside the Bailiff Shield was the inaugural Gordon Goodchild Trophy for the best stableford score. With the one-prize rule, this was won by Geoff Elcome with 40 points. Runner up was Dominic Murphy on 38 and third was Len Greaves, also 38.
For the record, the top stableford scores were:
2. Geoff Elcome 40
Raffle winners, who each receive £10 pro shop credit, were Steve Collins, Andy Brookman, Phil Armstrong and Sam Standen.
The result of the Bailiff Shield - the last of our GOTY qualifies - also decided our Golfer of the Year. Congratulations to Andy Fage who couldn't be caught. He ended the year on 70 points, followed by Paul Conibear on 59, Clive Thompson on 57, Len Greaves on 56 and Chris Dennis on 53.
