Paul and Barry on the 2nd Tee

The Green Tilley final was contested between Paul Conibear (7.2) and Barry Donovan (11.6) on the JOG course on a warm Autumn morning. Paul won the toss and made a strong start, going four up after the first five holes, tying the third and playing some steady golf.

With a southerly wind helping on the sixth, Barry was able to use one of his shots to pull a hole back, going on to win the seventh as well, making it two up to Paul. Paul was able to add wins on the eighth and ninth to get to the turn four up again.

Barry driving on the tenth

Barry managed to par the tenth with his drive finishing just to the top left of the green to win the hole. Then on the thirteenth Barry took the brook on with his driver in a brave move that saw him win the hole using another of his shots pulling it back to two up to Paul. The fourteenth was drawn, and Paul played steady sensible golf to win the fifteenth to go dormie 3.

Paul teed off first on the sixteenth putting his shot 13ft below the hole. With Barry's tee shot finishing just off the top right of the green it was too much for him to get anything from the hole, and hands were shaken in a fair victory for Paul.

As a note, it was a pleasure to referee the match played in good competitive spirit and fair sportsmanship - a fine example of how golf should be played.

Thanks also to the groups letting us play through. Shame you didn’t have any spare donuts!!
