Seniors away to Leighton Buzzard, September 26, 2022

The organiser’s report

This was our last match of the 2022 golfing season and Captain Algy Grimes had delegated the task of leading the team to Vice Captain Jonathan Lean. After such a long hot summer it was rather a shock that the day dawned with a chill in the air and drizzle. However, by the time we had been greeted with coffee and bacon rolls by our friends at Leighton Buzzard, spirits were high. The course had recovered from the ravages of summer sun and was green throughout.

Match 1 (aka Team Lean plus hanger on) were giving 18 shots to their erstwhile opponents. Nevertheless undaunted, and aided by a few playful but cutting remarks about the opposition’s play (such as, after opponent’s drive, “Oh dear, I thought the green was that way” and “well done! You nearly hit the ball that time”) Team Lean went one up at the first and lead throughout the front 8 by one.  Jonathan’s golf was on fire! He single putted 10 of the 18 holes (none of them short putts) and scored a magnificent net 68 - 3 under par off a handicap of 12Unfortunately, one of our intrepid opponents, receiving 16 shots, also scored a net 68 off a handicap of 28. So, from the 9th onwards the home team went 1 ahead and despite the hanger-on birdying the notorious 11th maintained their lead to close the match 1 up. What does that say about our Captain’s intrepid hanger on? Rubbish!

Alas when it came to the final announcement, our acting Captain had to say that we came a very close second, not just in our match but in every other match as well.

Final exam report reads “Must do better next year

PS. Jonathan’s joke was so good that he might use it again next year. But that’s okay because by next year we seniors would have forgotten it anyway.
