Gordon Percival Team Trophy and Martin Ives Shield October 5 2021

Captain Bill Walker presents the Gordon Percival Team Trophy to

Geoff Elcome, Richard Cooper and Andy Brown

Eighty-nine seniors competed for the Gordon Percival Team Trophy and Martin Ives Shield in blustery conditions on the John O’Gaunt course. Most enjoyed better weather conditions than had been forecast, with only a few of the last teams to tee off getting a soaking.
With the hidden teams revealed only after the completion of play, who would clinch the honours? In first place, with a combined score of 101 points, were Richard Cooper, Geoff Elcome and Andy Brown.
In second place, with 96 points, were Graham Berry, Lawrence Wilson and Peter Wade.
And in third place, with 95 points, were John Church, David Crosby and Ian Murray.
The Martin Ives Shield for the best net score was won by Richard Cooper, with an impressive 40 points. With a birdie on the 10th he was left regretting the decision not to enter the twos club!
Second place went to Trevor Darrington on 38 points and third, on countback, to Jonathan Lean, also on 38 points.
Commiserations to Richard Coventry, also on 38 points, who just missed out on a podium place.
The results increased the competition for the Senior Section Golfer of the Year title, leaving Paul Hammond in first place, followed by Alan Kirkham and Geoff Elcome. Still all to play for.
The only eagle of the day came from David Lincoln with a three on the par five 17th. His drive went through the big tree on the left, followed by a seven wood through a narrow gap in the trees and finally an eight iron into the hole. David admitted: “I thought I had hit it through the back of the green so took a wedge and putter with me only to find it in the hole. It wasn’t a classic eagle, as I went through a lot of foliage to get there.”
The competition raised £270 for Captain Bill’s Charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.
Raffle prizes were won by Paul Hammond, Clive Thompson, John Church and David Wood.
Two players - Tariq Bhatti and Len Greaves - shared the Twos Club spoils, winning a whopping £70 each in pro shop credit.

Winner of the Martin Ives Shield: Richard Cooper

Runners up: Graham Berry and Peter  Wade (plus Lawrence Wilson) with Captain Bill
