John O’Gaunt Seniors away to Dunstable Downs October 14 2021

Organiser Brian Bullen reports on the last match of the year which produced an incredible two holes in one for John O’Gaunt players

Holes in one by Gerry Degaute, pictured, and Peter Jarman

In 2021 John O’Gaunt Seniors had two events postponed due to fog or flooded greens. Arriving at 7.45 it looked like a further postponement was on the cards due to heavy fog, but luckily the fog lifted very quickly and we were able to tee off on time. We had won our home match and expected a tough battle on the return.

The result was that J.O.G. were defeated 6&2. Captain Bill played very well (four birdies), and I managed a chip and putt on the 17th green to win 2&1. We were lucky that D.D.’s organiser - nickname five counties - who had a great first nine, collapsed on the second nine.

Congratulations to Peter Wade and Gerry Degaute who won 2&1. Also worthy of a mention were Andy Shilton and Tony Goodson who lost by just one hole. The other scores were from 3&2 to 6&5.
The weather was fine, the course was good and we had a excellent lunch. As usual the opponents were very sociable.
The highlight of the day was not one, but two holes in one - by Peter Jarman on the 18th and Gerry Degaute on the 9th. I am very pleased to say that Peter and Gerry generously donated their hole in one prize money to Bill’s charity, rather than spending the money on drinks. D.D’s player’s had bought drinks and there was wine on the table.
Finally, congratulations to Roger (D.D’s organiser) who won the nearest the pin on the 18th hole by just one inch!
