Seniors away to Wellingborough August 11 2025

Seniors Captain Tony Lloyd and Organiser Neil Pinnington relax with their Wellingborough opponents waiting for the overall scores to some in

Organiser Neil Pinnington reports

The team all arrived punctually to be greeted by superb weather (if a little hot) and a warm welcome from our hosts.

The captain and I had been soundly beaten in the home match, but Tony was in no mood to let that happen again. The success of his drive on Captain's Day seemed to have gone to his head. He was playing way better than his handicap. My only contribution in the match was to hold the flag for him as he holed putt after putt to win 7 of the first 12 holes. At this point we were 5 up.  I then made the mistake of mentioning that his efforts would be writ large in the match report. This caused an immediate catastrophic loss of form (for both of us) and we lost the next two holes. However, Tony then rallied to win the 15th and the match 4&3.

In the past. our matches against Wellingborough have been characterised by a comfortable win at home followed by a disastrous result at Wellingborough. However, the away results had been improving.  Last year’s loss of 3.5 to 4.5 was by far our best.  Having started out with a win, Tony and I awaited the following results with high hopes of doing even better. However, in the second match Warren Churms and Paul Dobson lost to a player who was having an equally good a day as our captain (as reported by Warren).  When Chris Dennis and Algy achieved an honourable half, the match was all square and could have gone either way. Our hopes gradually grew stronger as each of the next four matches recorded wins. Congratulations to all concerned. Special mention should be given to Paul Life and Tariq Bhatti for their impressive 5&4 win. Also, Jonathan Lean and Paul Jeeves who were 3 down standing on the 13th tee but then won the next 5 holes for a remarkable 2&1 win. Commiserations to Oz and Graham Gadsden who narrowly lost on the eighteenth green.

The final match result was a magnificent 5.5 to 2.5 win.

I also must record that I managed to write my name on the nearest the pin sheet only to be deprived of the bottle of wine by Chris Dennis.

The detailed results were:

Tony Lloyd and Neil Pinnington won 4&3

Warren Churms and Paul Dobson lost 5&4
