Seniors away to Luffenham Heath August 29 2025

Senior Captain Tony Lloyd with JOG partner Terry Sweeney and Luffenham Heath opponents

Organiser David Barlow reports

An early 9am first tee start for our away match at Luffenham. The weather was set fair and the course was in lovely condition, even though they too had done their course work the previous week.

The home organiser (Martin) wanted to try something a bit different and arrange the matches in such a way that each match was as near to a scratch match as could be achieved I.e. the low handicappers would play with the low handicappers, the mids with the mids and so on, thus meaning that no one was getting m(any) shots against an opponent. A more level playing field. Your correspondent was happy with this; I was getting shots (3). It also meant that we broke with tradition and our Captain did not play with the Organiser on this occasion.

Tony Lloyd & Terry Sweeney. Won 1 up
Terry chipped in on the 10th from 50 yards; they matched it with a frankly outrageous putt from over 30 feet for a half. Nerves jangling. Nerves held to win. A great result. The Captain leading from the front.

Andy Brown & David Barlow. Lost by a lot….
Our opponent, Francis brought his little dog, Winnie (very cute cockapoo) along and we obliged by making sure he had the dog licence by losing 7&6. I never got to use 2 of my 3 shots because it was all over by the 13th. In fairness, our opponents combined were +1 (gross) at this point and completed their round level par (gross) A golfing masterclass. I couldn’t understand why Mark, my opponent, who had roughly the same handicap as mine was striking it like a pro and I was hacking it with lots of effort and very indifferent striking … he had been a 1 handicapper in his youth. I wasted mine….(youth that is).

Roy Brown & Michael Newstead. Won 1 up.
Another close one. Roy said he “enjoyed the sand”. I think he was referring to his frequent visits rather than the higher quality of the silvery powder. Well done.

Neil Pinnington & Dick Cobb. Lost 4&3.
Dick described it as a “golf lesson”. He cheered up when he found out about my result.

Peter Imray and Chris Dennis. Won 2&1.
Our lads repelled a strong performance from the home pair especially on the par 3s. Well done. Peter said he was disappointed in the organiser’s performance in what he thought was the marquee pairing. He meant me.

It was going so well….. until.

Tariq Bhatti & Tony Walters. Lost 2 down.
Tony simply said that it was “very close”. Evidently.

Paul Life & Steve Collins. Lost 3&2.
Steve said that they never sank a putt. He had the consolation of winning the NTP on the 9th hole. … but presumably not sinking the putt. 😖. Steve won a rather nice pitch mark repairer tool gadget as a souvenir from a course that he absolutely loved.

Steve Mathers & Gavin Little. Lost 2&1.
A close match again which was decided in their favour with two birdies in the last three holes.

The result.
Luffenham Heath 5 / John O’ Gaunt 3.

A very tasty chicken and mushroom pie completed a most enjoyable day at a splendid course and venue.
