Seniors at home to Saffron Walden August 12 2025

Seniors Captain Tony Lloyd and organiser Michael Newstead relax on the John O'Gaunt terrace with their Saffron Walden opponents

Organiser Michael Newstead reports

Enshrined in the Game Act 1831, August 12th, known as, The Glorious 12th, signifies the start of the red grouse shooting season in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and indeed it was a glorious morning when we welcomed Saffron Walden Seniors to take on John O'Gaunt Seniors on Carthagena, a course new to many of the visitors, but which from comments heard, they enjoyed playing.
Now, we all know how deceiving the greens on Carthagena can be, but in the first match out, Captain Tony and myself versus Saffron Walden Captain Rob and Organiser Gerry, Rob quickly showed his mastery of their quirks, holing putts from the top level on both the 7th and the 18th.
From the back of each green, he simply rolled his ball perfectly to the start of the slope, and gravity did the rest - he made it look so easy!  I'm afraid his prowess on these occasions plus his 5 for 4 on the 17th - the home team had a gross par but no shot - finished us off. Result, visitors 2 up.
My first task of the day had been to check my mail to see if there were any last-minute withdrawals. Instead I found an email from Captain Tony enquiring if I was OK. He had heard I had been at hospital on Monday.  Yes, I am fine, thanks Tony for asking.
Half-way through getting ready, my phone rings, now I do have a withdrawal due to injury.   Step forward our hero of the day Gerry DeGaute, who, woken from his slumbers by a phone call at 6.30 in the morning, simply responded, "I'm on the case," when informed I needed him to replace the injured golfer.
The Faldo Junior event taking place on John O'Gaunt meant Carthagena was very busy but being permitted to start from both the 1st and 17th tee alleviated the problem and all groups finished in time to enjoy a well-earned libation before sitting down to an excellent lunch at 14:15. Many thanks to the catering and front of house staff for taking care of us.
Out on the course, nearest the pins were visitors Gary MacSwan 6th hole and JOG's Martyn Graham on the 8th.
After the 1st match, as already told, JOG were 1 down.
The 2nd match - Andrew Lawrence/Derek Page vs Richard Slater/Geoff Tobin - was drawn.
Third out - Peter Imray/Warren Churms vs Lee Wooton/Andy Edwards - a win for JOG 3 & 1
Next Chris Saunders/Kevin Barbour vs Charles Gjertsen/Patrick Lavelle - JOG win 2 up
Then came Rob Ebsworth/Martyn Graham vs Baron Gotfraind/Gary MacSwan - JOG loss 4 & 2
Richard Cobb/Barry Donovan vs Bill Sandford/Phil Holmes - JOG win 2 up
Penultimate game Oz Osman/Steve Luckman vs Brandon Chapman/Richard Yaxley - JOG loss 2 down
At this point, with the match tied at 3.5 points each, up step Trevor Darrington and Gerry DeGaute to pull off a 3 & 1 win, Gerry topping off his day with a magnificent birdie on the 15th.
Announcing the score of a JOG win 4.5 to 3.5, I leave you with the words spoken by Gerry, the visiting organiser to his Saffron Walden team: "Gentlemen, we continue our unbroken record of never winning an away match!"

Overall JOG tally this year
Won 10
Lost 10
Drawn 1
