Senior Captain Tony Lloyd and organiser Trevor Darrington on the Carthagena 1st tee with Graham Westlake-Tritton and Nick King from Leighton Buzzard
Senior Captain Tony Lloyd reports
When a visiting Captain tells you his team has won nine matches on the trot you have to wonder what your chances are of breaking the pattern.
Would Leighton Buzzard cruise to another victory under the leadership of Graham Westlake-Tritton or would John O'Gaunt organiser Trevor Darrington's pairings win the day?
As the captains' group teed off on the Carthagena 1st, the opposition's confidence drained a little with their Captain hitting his drive out of bounds.
Sadly, I followed suit and it looked like the first hole would be a duel between Trevor Darrington and LBGC's Nick King.
My money was on Trevor until his third shot found the greenside bunker and Leighton Buzzard took an early lead.
We (well Trevor!) fought back gamely, winning the next three holes to go 2 up.
In the meantime there were a few comedy moments provided by your Captain - the best of which occurred on the 7th tee. Whiffing the ball a few yards (some might say feet!) across the cinder path I casually lined up my hybrid for a shot to get me back in the hole. And it might have worked apart from the fact that it hit the LBGC Captain's golf trolley square on!
Normally the Blog Editor would delete the above paragraph to spare the Captain's blushes. But the truth must out!
At the turn some steady golf from Graham and Nick had got them back to all square and the back nine was nip and tuck until wins for the visitors on the 17th and 18th sealed our fate. Lost 2 down.
Still confident that Trevor's pairings would reverse our fortunes we waited patiently for the other groups to report back.
Sadly, apart from a win by Dave Wood and Algy Grimes and a half by Paul Life and Gerry Degaute, we became the LBGC Captain's 10th victim on the trot.
Nearest the pin winner for John O'Gaunt was Warren Churms.
Congratulations to Trevor for organising and for selecting lasagne and chips followed by panna cotta with berry compote which eased the pain of another defeat.
