Senior Section organiser Algy Grimes and Captain Tony Lloyd with their
Letchworth opponents on the John O'Gaunt 1st tee
Organiser Algy Grimes reports
On a sunny but breezy morning, the players gradually
appeared amid relief that we had two complete teams. Following the usual
introductions we gathered on the John O’Gaunt course to tee off, five groups
from the first tee and three groups from the seventeenth.
With the opposing Captain putting his shot into the tree left front of the first, we thought we had a chance with the home drives being up the fairway, however his second shot was on the edge of the green.
Fortunately both Captain Tony and myself were also in good positions and a half in par ensued.
We lost the second to par but a net birdie from Tony on the third won that one.
On the fourth Tony had a ‘Barnes Wallis’ off the lake, but the hole was halved in par.
We lost the fifth to par after their Captain found the hole with a 40 yard chip.
We brought it back to all square with Tony’s two shots on Index 1.
The match followed similar form, halves or wins in par. The wheels came off for the Letchworth organiser as he was struggling to control his remote-control trolley and on the ninth it fell over without the wheels!
The fourteenth again saw their Captain in the trees on the left by a long way, but no worry he played the best shot of the day through the trees on to the green and ended with a birdie.
There was never more than one hole in the game, until the end,
all square after 16, we managed to lose the last two holes.
Most of the other matches seemed to follow a similar
scenario and as the results came in we were down 4 – 2 with two results to come. Unfortunately they were both 3 & 1, one win and one loss, therefore the
overall result was another loss 5 – 3. Nearest the pin was won by Paul Hammond
After showering and changing, most players took advantage of the sunny terrace before enjoying a chicken and chips meal with sticky toffee pudding afterwards.
Compliments were paid to the green staff as well for their work in providing a very good course.
The individual scores were;
Tony Lloyd and Algy Grimes – Lost 2 down
Graham Gadsden and Paul Life – Won 2 & 1
Steve Luckman and Paul Jones – Lost 3 & 2
Jed Isbell and Paul Dobson – Lost 3 & 1
Paul Hammond and Terry Sweeney – Won 3 & 1
Paul L Jeeves and Fred Williams – Won 2 & 1
David Trotter and Stephen Collins – Lost 5 & 3
Graham Court and Rob Ebsworth - Lost 3 & 2
