Seniors away to Millbrook September 5 2023

 Organiser Peter Wade reports

What a start! We all duly arrived at Millbrook on time for our coffee only to find the course totally fogbound. The tee times were delayed by about 45 minutes – but that gave us some additional time to chat with the opposition! When the fog cleared, it revealed a beautiful course in very good condition.

In a break from tradition, the Captain and organiser were relegated to second off to allow Barry Donovan an early start. So, they led us out into the bright sunshine as the fog began to clear. They eventually finished with a 5 & 3 loss despite Barry playing 3 shots below his handicap.

Secondly, it soon became clear to Jonathan and me that the home team meant business and indeed, it was not long before we were 3 down. We managed to get the match back to all square by the 12th. But despite our best efforts, the match eventually finished with us losing 2&1. There was also some “dodgy stickwork” when one of our opponents AKA Father Christmas, used the flag stick to work out who was nearest the pin on the 10th – it may not surprise you that Jonathan lost out to our other opponent Martin!

Gerry Degaute and Jack Shepherd battled valiantly but came out losers by 1 hole.

One of the highlights for the JOG team was the performance of the Andy Brown Chris Roy team, who despite having to give the opposition a total of 49 shotsmanaged to win by 1 hole, thanks to 7 pars on the back nine from AndyWell done – a tremendous effort.

Sadly, Rob Ebsworth and Tony Goodson were not able to emulate that, running out losers with a 7 & 6 defeat.

Nick Seeley had to retire due to illness halfway round, leaving Andy Shilton to soldier on, succumbing to a 7 & 5 defeat.

Michael Newstead and Jed Isbell ran out losers by 3 & 2.

Steve Luckman and Ken Brewer lost on the 18th by 1 hole.

The Nearest the Pin and Nearest the Pin in 2 were won respectively by Jed Isbell and Peter Wade (drove the green and putted to 4 feet).

In the first leg, JOG managed a halved match, but as you will have realised, this leg was lost 7–1 giving an overall loss. Maybe we will get our revenge next year!!
