Organiser Neil Pinnington reports
To reprise last year's report "A visit to Wellingborough is always to be enjoyed". It is an impressive place and the welcome is always courteous and hospitable. However, as in previous years, our opponents were out to avenge a defeat at John O'Gaunt . Back in April we had won 5-3.
From the start, it was obvious that they meant business. The Captain and I lost the first hole. However I managed to scrape a win on the second. The Captain then hit a superb pin-seeking shot over the water at the third for a gimme birdie. There followed a very tight match with never more than one hole in it. Ten of the last fifteen holes were halved, the match ending all square
Further evidence of their determination came in the bar afterwards as each of our opponents' teams trooped in one after another to report their wins. We were only saved by our final two teams to report.Richard Westergreen-Thorne and Rob Ebsworth had gallantly lost the eighteenth hole to allow their opponents a half. Indeed, we may well have been without a win at all. At one point , Andy Brown and Algy Grimes were three down in their match. However Algy reported to me that Andy then played really well to pull it back. They ran out winners by 1 hole. Congratulations to them both and to Andy for stealing the nearest the pin prize from me.
The final result was a 6-2 win for Wellingborough. Obviously , this avenged fully the April result. The only crumb of comfort being that it did better last year's score of 6.5-1.5. At that rate of improvement it may well be some years before we register a win at Wellingborough.
