Jonathan shelters from the rain ahead of his Captain’s Drive
Senior Captain’s Day could so easily have been a wash-out. But despite a forecast of heavy afternoon rain, nearly everyone made it back to the clubhouse before the heavens opened.
But while the 100 or so entrants swapped tales of what might have been over drinks, sandwiches, chips and cakes, there remained one final piece of business … the Captain’s Drive.
So in steady drizzle, Jonathan Lean made his way back to the first tee on John O’Gaunt while a good crowd gathered in the conservatory to witness his efforts… while staying dry of course.
Two practice shots and then the real thing, delayed slightly while Jonathan hunted for his lost pink tee. There was a lot riding on it for those who had bet on the result. Jonathan’s shot went straight down the middle … all of 90 yards! But with the betting starting at 140 yards, it was reload time. This time Jonathan managed 185 yards into the right rough, which was guessed by David Streatfield. David very generously donated his winnings to the Captain’s Charity, Keech Hospice.
But what about the competition? Well it was tight at the top, with four entrants coming in with 39 points separated only by countback.
In third place was Club Captain Mike Tipper whose round included a sandy birdie on the 16th. In second place was Stephen Cherry, who also birdied the 16th. But the winner, who attracted some friendly barracking for asking how anyone could miss the hole with such good greens, was Paul Life.
Nearest the pin prizes went to David List (4th), Rob Ebsworth (10th), Gavin Little (12th in two), and Malcolm Roberts (16th).
Virtual nearest the pin in the pro shop was won by Andy Brown with 1ft 4ins.
Thanks to Paula and her catering staff for coping with 100 hungry players arriving en masse after a shotgun start and to Pat Lloyd and Jean Peacock for handing out the score cards and selling raffle tickets.
The sale of raffle tickets plus the Captain’s Drive and Virtual Nearest the Pin raised a whopping £679 for Jonathan’s charity.
Being a qualifier, the result shakes up the Golfer of the Year leaderboard which now reads: Keith Howlett (50), Jed Isbell (42), Richard Knell (40), Ian Maddison (39), Clive Thompson (35), Malcolm Roberts (35).
