Organiser Gerry Degaute reports
As always Letchworth away proved to be a very popular match with a good number of jokers played and a high level of demand for the remaining slots on the team.
The Organisers arranged for good weather whilst the Captains had clearly worked on their stand up routines evidenced by the extent of genuine laughter at lunch.
The course was in excellent condition and everything was set up for some sociable whilst still competitive golf.
Our captain drew a mega tee shot down the first and then flicked his wedge to birdieable distance; the opposition could only get on in three. Yes you’ve guessed it our man three putted and we lost the first to a single putt.
This pattern continued on the second when I put my tee shot on and then three putted. Fortunately our captain gained a half with an up and down against the opposition’s sandy par.
The front nine continued to be tight and at the turn we were one down. Then we won 10, 11, 13 and 14 (where we hit nearest the pin contenders, albeit Paul Beck in due course won the vino).
The opposition then won the 15th and then on the par 5 16th our captain played the shot of the round; finding himself 150 yards out and with a restricted swing he hit a stunning shot to no more than 20 feet. With his par safely secured the opposition failed to find a par so we had secured the first win for JOG. Amongst the high points for us were a cold buffet lunch and a three tee start.
Game results were:
Jonathan Lean/Gerry Degaute won 3&2.
Andy Brown/Oz Ozman won 4&3.
Paul Hammond/Trevor Darrington won 4&3.
Barry Donovan/Fred Williams lost 3&2.
Richard Young/Tony Goodson won 6&5.
Steve Luckman/Paul Beck won 5&4.
Jed Isbell/Nick Seeley lost 3&1.
Ian Maddison/Sam Standen lost 2&1.
So the overall result was John O’ Gaunt 5 Letchworth 3 which means that this year we beat our friends at Letchworth over the two legs by 9-7.
