Seniors away to Aspley Guise, Thursday April 27 2023

Organiser Jim Kerr reports

The weather Gods were with us today. It was cool but dry with a little bit of a breeze.
Captain Jonathan and I played David and Steve. It was all very polite and courteous on the 1st tee.
Jonathan is on the 1st  green a respectable 15ft from the hole for 2 and I am just off for 3. David is out of the hole and Steve is on the left of the green 50ft from the hole. I chip up to the hole and then watch Steve ram his 50ft  putt straight in to the cup for 3. Jonathan gets a par. We are 1 down.
I think “so much for welcome to Aspley Guise”.
David and I had a shot on the second. David is out of the second, Steve gets a 7 with no shot, I get a 7 with a shot - all square.
3rd hole and we are on the green. Jonathan is on for 3, Steve is 25ft from the hole just off the green.
Steve bangs another monster putt in the hole. I'm going off this fellow.
I am glad to say we settled into a more steady game with Jonathan doing the heavy lifting..
We finished our game with an honourable half. Jonathan gave Steve a short putt on the 18th for a halved match and the longer we stayed in the bar afterwards this putt got longer finishing at 15ft but to be honest 15ft was a gimme to Steve anyway.
The course had areas roped off because of the boggy ground but it still played well.
Ray Smart was allowed to use a buggy for all but 3 holes . The club kindly laid an electric trolley for him at those 3 holes..
Now to get down to the match.
We started brightly with the first match halved, 2nd match won.
The 3rd match was halved then we lost matches 4, 5 and 6.
We won the 7th and halved the 8th.
In my team's defence I would like to point out that we were giving the opposition 75 shots .
Don't you just love our new handicap system.
Thanks to Aspley Guise having a two tee start, 3 teams went off the 17th .
We sat down to lunch at 2pm and after a perfect golf lunch of steak pie chips and veg followed by a nice tart for afters we were making our way home by 3.30pm.
Oh happy days, good weather, nearly good golf, lovely golf course and great company.
Well done my team. We will molicate ( Glasgow slang for hammer them) them next time.
