Seniors away to St Neots May 29 2025

 Team Captain David Barlow reports

In blustery conditions on a course which needed a lot of respect (more than your author gave it) the JOG team suffered a heavy loss, 7-1.

Match 1. Tony Walters (organiser) & David Barlow (captain for the day). Lost 4&3.
David (the author) maintained his 100% record (LLLLLL) and played his only good shot of the day to win NTP on hole 8, 135 yards across the River Kym (yes, I had to look it up). In a rather scruffy match, Tony played ok, David didn’t. Tony parked his van in the main car park to wind up our hosts.

Match 2. David McNair & David Price. Lost 5&4.
When asked for a comment on the match, David Mc politely declined and said, “No”. Enough said.

Match 3. Martyn Graham and Neil Pinnington. Lost 5&4.
Martyn simply conceded that they had been beaten by the better pair.

Match 4. Richard Cobb & Warren Churms. Lost 1 down.
I was told that Richard enjoyed the fauna and flora of the course, and in a close seesaw match our guys were 1 up with 4 to play. The match was decided on the greens and, in his own words, Warren suffered “arthritis of the putter”, surely a medical first even for the senior section?

Match 5. Paul Jones and Tony Goodson. Won 2 up.
Well done guys, you saved our blushes. Good golf from our pair in this match assisted by them mistakenly playing the wrong ball going down the final hole.

Match 6. Paul Life and Dave Wood. Lost 7&6.
Dave’s verdict, “abysmal”. Paul was a member at St Neots for 18 years before he joined JOG. Time well spent πŸ˜€?

Match 7. Algy Grimes & Oz Osman. Lost 4&3.
Algy and Oz lost to a “putting masterclass”. Fair enough.

Match 8. Steve Mathers & Trevor Darrington. Lost 3&2.
Trevor opened up with a birdie on their first hole, the 17th. Steve showed great commitment, with good distance off the tee…but with directional issues. The quote from Steve’s opponent was: “I’ve never seen anyone go out of bounds on the 1st from the 11th tee (approximately 200 yards right”).

Oh well! The hunters chicken and rhubarb crumble were good, to match the warm welcome and the friendly banter.

Running total for JOG Seniors:

Five wins, five losses and one half
