Tony Lloyd reports on our home match against South Beds
With half the John O'Gaunt team playing three days on the trot after our first ever Tour at Forest Pines, how would the lads perform? Would they be exhausted from two rounds and a sociable evening in the bar or would they be nicely limbered up and ready for a walk around the much shorter Carthagena course?
The weather seemed to have defied the sunny forecast as we tee'd off at 8.30am and layers were the order of the day until the heavy mist burned off and the sun came out.
The first match - myself and Chris Dennis against South Beds' Senior Captain and Club Captain - got off to a shaky start as a nett birdie from the opposition took the first honours.
However, a JOG win on the 2nd and 3rd righted the ship.
An amazing South Beds shot into the 5th, inches from the pin, brought the score back to all square before we went on a run to end the front nine 3 up.
Then South Beds hunkered down to bring them back to all square standing on the 16th tee.
That was the turning point. I was out of it with a lost ball left and their Captain overshot the tree to end up somewhere, we think, in the gorse.
That left a dual between JOG's Chris and their Senior Captain, both sitting pretty at the top of the hill. Jack Lalji went wide of the green hampered by a tree and Chris's shot landed just off the green - Chris also had a shot so, result, we were 1up again.
A fine par from Chris on the 17th sealed the scoreline in our favour at 2&1.
The second match was also a win for JOG but we weren't counting our chickens as we sat on the terrace in the sunshine.
However we need not have worried as the rest of the matches came in: three JOG wins, two defeats and a half.
Then we really did count our chickens! Two pieces each for lunch with chips, onion rings and salad. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
Over dinner news emerged of the best comedy moment of the day when the tee square sprinklers on the 14th came on as Dave Trotter was teeing off. Soaked but unperturbed Dave carried on like the trouper he is, later trying to take out an opponent with his remote control trolley!
Thanks to Chris Dennis for organising a great day and for his impressive play.
Nearest the pin for JOG was Paul Hammond.
