Saffron Walden 5th - our nearest the pin - with Audley End House in the far distance
Michael Newstead reports on our away match against Saffron Walden
It was a gorgeous, sunny day when the team of 16, (twelve of whom had played their Joker to be there), from John O’Gaunt faced the men from Saffron Walden Golf Club, full of hope and expectation. The course was in magnificent condition, but the greens, oh, they were treacherous for those who weren’t used to them, fast and with many twists and turns for the unwary.
Now, I could use the excuse I was gardening, masking up, and painting my garden fence so my legs, arms, back were aching, but that would be disingenuous! So, I will simply own up and admit I played a rubbish game! How did the rest of the team perform, I will leave you to decide, dear reader, when you peruse the score line. It is however fair to point out, that had just a little bit of luck come JOG’s way, the result would have been a little better.
Matches Results – Saffron Walden/JOG
Tony Lloyd and Michael Newstead: thoroughly thrashed 4 and 3
Terry Domagala and Gerry Degaute: lost 5 and 4
Steve Luckman and Gavin Little: lost 2 down, but just 1 hole in it for 16 holes. On 17th Saffron Walden made a 17 footer to win hole, followed by drive to 3 feet on 18th
Barry Donovan and David Price: 2 up – our one win, well done you two
Stephen Collins and Rob Ebsworth: 5 down after 6 holes, fought back to level, missed short put on 17 to even the match – good fight you two, bad luck at the end
Kevin Barbour and Warren Churms: Lost 2 down. Perhaps having to chase his trolley didn’t help Warren
Richard Cobb and Neil Pinnington: chatting with Neil, we agreed it was a bad hair day!
Derek Young and Ian Maddison: Lost 5 and 4
So, with just our one success, a resounding win for Saffron Walden, congratulations to them. However, our chance to even things up will be the return match on Tuesday 12th August, so watch this space.
Our day did end well however, as we were treated to a lovely meal of roast chicken in tarragon and mushroom sauce, served with seasonal vegetables, followed by spotted dick and custard, which went down very well indeed. And, to finish, we were served with coffee, which all agreed, is just the way a meal should end.
