Seniors Captain Algy Grimes presents Club Captain Rob Bage with the Kethro Tray

The long, hot summer continued for Senior Captain’s Day with 96 golfers enjoying near perfect conditions on the manicured and irrigated John O’ Gaunt course.

Despite this the scoring was relatively low, with only three players scoring 36 points or more.

One of these was Club Captain Rob Bage who romped home in first place with 43 points, made up of 15 pars and three bogeys, a fine performance given that he was playing off 10. “It was just one of those days when everything went right,” he told the assembled crowd as he was presented with the Kethro Tray by Seniors Captain Algy Grimes.

In second place, on 39 points, was Robert Isaacson and in third, with 36, was Keith Fuller.

Nearest the pin on the 4th was won by Paul Jones, nearest the pin on the 10th by Vernon Toms, nearest the pin on the 16th by Len Greaves and nearest the pin in two on the 12th by Malcolm Lee. The virtual nearest the pin in the pro shop, which raised £48 for the Captain’s charity, was won by Paul Clark.

Algy’s Captain’s drive, expertly measured by Steve Collins, was 187 yards in the left rough, and won by Kevin Cocker. This raised £46 for the Captain’s charity.

Algy thanked Ladies Section Vice Captain Lorna Jerome and Jean Cobb for their help organising the raffle, which raised £350 for his charity, the UK Sepsis Trust. And he paid special thanks to Competitions Secretary Jonathan Lean for organising the entire day.

The competitors enjoyed cold drinks and snacks on the course followed by sandwiches, chips and cake in the clubhouse, with the kitchen staff meeting the challenge of a full house of hungry players following the shotgun start.

Twos Club winners, sharing £97, were Peter Gibson, Tony Goodson, Len Greaves, Paul Jones and Nick Seeley.
