Seniors away to Wellingborough August 8 2022

Organiser Neil Pinnington reports

A visit to Wellingborough is always to be enjoyed, to quote our esteemed Vice Captain - "Lovely Course, Lovely Clubhouse and always Lovely Lunch". For this visit, I can also add lovely weather. It was just a pity about the golf.

The Captain and I knew we were in trouble from the start.  Their Captain's partner topped his second shot which ran and ran along the parched fairway onto the greenHe then sank a massive putt for birdie. The same player then proceeded to hit his tee shot on the 4th hole to within 2 feet for another birdie. He continued to play well below his handicap, ably supported by their Captain whose putter never let him down. Despite the sterling efforts  of our Captain (with little or no support from me), the inevitable result was a fairly commanding win for our opponents.

Congratulations must go to Bob Anderson and Len Greaves who managed an equally commanding win for John O'Gaunt in their match. Bob obviously benefitted from not having to give 19 shots. He had done so in the previous two Wellingborough matches, and I had promised that would not be the case this time.

An honourable mention is also due to Chris Roy and Richard Knell who scored the only other points in the match, as their match finished all square.

Unfortunately all other matches joined Captain and myself in the debit column. Special commiserations to the Vice Captain who was now the player giving the aforementioned 19 shots. With such a handicap, it was not surprising that  he and Tony Goodson were unable to register a win.

The overall result was a 6.5 /1.5 win for Wellingborough, more than avenging the 6/2 defeat they suffered at John O'Gaunt in April.

We look forward to doing battle again next year.
