Seniors’ home match vs St Neots June 22 2021

Seniors’ Section Captain Bill Walker reports on the day’s action

The day dawned to the prospect of our first home match for 21 months. Given the first 2 away match losses the need to do well was at the forefront of the Seniors’ Captain’s mind. The accolade of having gone a whole year undefeated was wearing very thin as we seemed to be making up for lost time with multiple defeats. On the positive, the weather was dry if overcast, the Carthagena course pristine, and the banter within and between the teams was as good as ever.

Another small step for mankind but a giant leap for us golfers was the re-introduction of the nearest the pin prizes with sanitized markers each with a small bottle of hand sanitizer attached; thank you Gordon.  The away prize was won on the 4th hole by Nitin Patel, while the home prize was won on the 8th  by Jack Shepherd who put his tee shot just 5 feet from the pin. However, as a sign of things to come his opponent proceeded to hole a 20+ foot putt for birdie requiring Jack to hole his putt for a half; which he did.

Thanks also to our two chefs Jo and Haley in the kitchen for steak pie followed by sticky toffee pudding with decorative marbled sauce. How did they do that?

Alas, the final result was a loss 3 ½ to 4 ½. Not a win but certainly an improvement and as ever a very enjoyable day.  So, looking forward to next week when we take on the boys from Letchworth GC.

Onward and upward!
