Longest Day Challenge Sunday June 20 2021

Four Captains were up with the larks to play 54 holes of golf in aid of their chosen charities by taking part in the Longest Day Challenge. Club Captain Pauline Aubigne, Seniors Section Captain Bill Walker, Ladies Section Captain Anita Isaacson and Juniors Section Captain Bradley Williams played 18 holes on Carthagena, then 36 holes on John O’Gaunt. If you haven’t already made a donation, you can find the details below along with Captain Bill’s report of the day

Captain Bill’s narrative

They say an English summer comprises 2 warm days and a thunderstorm. Well that was the weather leading up to this year’s Longest Day Event. A week of hot weather followed by 2 days of heavy rain with predictions of more rain on the day did not bode well for our 4 intrepid Captains who set forth to play 54 holes of golf in a day in support of their respective nominated charities.  However, the day itself dawned overcast but dry and that is how it stayed throughout the day. Perfect!

Club Captain Pauline Aubigne accompanied by Ladies’ Section Captain Anita Isaacson, Seniors’ Section Captain Bill Walker and Juniors’ Section Captain Bradley Williams Tee’doff at 7AM on the Carthagena Course; an outbreak of mid-summer madness on the John O’Gaunt was definitely to be avoided. Despite having just recovered from a broken wrist a few months before and playing just 3 rounds of golf since his return, Bradley was smashing the ball 260+ yards down the fairway. Well, some of the time. On others we were playing “pick your quadrant”. We played a 4-ball better ball Stableford for the first round before moving to the John O’Gaunt course to play a needle match of guys versus girls. The finale on the John O’Gaunt course was Greensomes(fatigue was setting in by then) With Pauline & Bradley versus Anita and Bill. This final round was without doubt the most intense as we were joined by a small cadre of supporters four of whom took over as caddies and somehow the atmosphere changed. This is just like on the telly. “Someone call sky” was heard.

The results of each format were not important other than to say that Bradley was on the winning side 3 times. So honours go to him and the Juniors’ Section. What really mattered was that a great day was enjoyed by all and a great deal of money was raised for each of the respective Captain’s Charities.  At the time of writing (a rather stiff and aching morning after)the money is still rolling in.

On behalf of all 4 Captain’s, thank you to all for the many kind words of encouragement leading up to and during the day, and particularly for your outstandingly generous donations to our very worthy causes.
