Harpenden Common at home May 12 2026

Seniors Captain David Barlow and organiser Peter Imray with Harpenden Common opponents

Organiser Peter Imray reports

On a cold, overcast, but thankfully not overly wet Tuesday morning, JoG's Seniors finest gathered together to do battle with Harpenden Common on Carthagena. The course had improved with the rain of the previous few days but not sufficiently to belay a request to the club's powers-that-be to allow us to offer pick and place on the fairways for this match only.

The match as a whole was tight in most of the games, and was perhaps best epitomised by the pairing of Jed Isbell and Steve Luckman versus Rex Mayo and Steve Torrance from Harpenden. Starting on the 17th, and virtually playing off scratch - both Jed and Rex received a mere single shot - the home pairing quickly went into a one hole lead and took advantage of the Arctic Training Ground that is Carthagena's 1st tee, to go two up by the second. Warming up processes didn't take that long however, since Harpenden won the 3rd and the 6th to peg it back to level, then quickly consolidated by using their one shot on the 7th to good advantage to go one up. The 10th saw a further Harpenden advance to go two up, and they were still two up standing on the15th tee, with only two holes to play. Jed and Steve rallied however and won both the 15th and 16th holes, to tie the game and earn a crucial half point.

A very evenly matched handicap fourball, producing a very tight game, with the overall match also proving to be tight. JoG emerged as 5 games to 3 victors however, to continue David Barlow's fine winning run, and despite he and his partner's struggles with personal form, further proof (if proof were needed) of his inspiring leadership!
