Organiser Andy Shilton reports on the day’s action
The return to post pandemic golf took another step as 42 Senior Members and 42 Guests from 24 different clubs sought the honours on a beautiful day on the beautifully prepared John O’Gaunt course. Such was the enthusiasm to get started that golfers were trying to register 45 minutes before it was due to open. Our efficient reception team of Jean Cobb and Jackie Lansdown from the Ladies section soon had everything in hand and with Ian MacAinsh and Bill Burrows acting as starters we were off.
The weather was fine and as ever the company on the day was extremely convivial. After play the golfers tucked into a lovely plate of ham egg and chips. It was great to see the clubhouse full of happy golfers again.
After food the results were revealed as follows:
Nearest to the pin on 4
With 6 golfers getting their names on the nearest to the pin on the 4th it was no wonder so many stayed for the results. But in the end Richard Young came out
Senior Section Captain Bill Walker with Richard Young
Longest Drive On the 9th
Won by Paul Hammond who was in the first group off the 1st, though the committee had to arbitrate on whether using a 3 wood actually counted as a drive.
Nearest to the pin in 2 on 12
Won by Trevor Darrington beating 3 other contenders.
Nearest to the pin on 16
Possibly the highlight of the day was a hole in one on the 16th for Richard Munn from Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands GC. Richard was out in the first group off the 10th so every golfer who hit the green thereafter thought they were in with a shout only to have their hopes dashed by the words ‘hole in one’ on the marker at the edge of the green.
Third Place
That hole in one assured third place on countback to Tony and Richard Munn ahead of David Price and Brian Mansbridge from Northampton Golf Club who had both also been in with a shout on the nearest to the pin on both the 4th and the 12th respectively.
Second place
On 42 points was John Whitbread and Harvey Price from Bedford & County GC.
Second place: John Whitbread and Harvey Price
First Place
The overall win with 43 points went to event organiser Andy Shilton with guest Tom Greaves from Wyboston Lakes GC. Andy saw that it was bad form to win his own event and tried hard not to, but Tom was having none of it and almost singlehandedly carried them over the line.
First place: Tom Greaves and Andy Shilton
As usual Captain Bill Walker did the honours by presenting the prizes but in a rare Senior Moment the organiser, golf manager and captain failed to remember the prestigious trophy… hopefully no-one else noticed!
Many thanks to all that played the event and all that supported it in the various capacities.
