Knockout Competitions	Entry Criteria
Green Tilley Singles	Members with a competition handicap
Holmwood Plate	Those who have lost their first round match of the Green Tilley and those with a bye in the first round of the Green Tilley who have lost their second round match.
Seniors’ Foursomes	Members with a competition handicap. Drawn pairs.

 

Annual Competitions	Points earned from the best 6 singles competitions entered
Golfer of the Year	Players are awarded: ·                     1 point is awarded for all golfers entering and returning a valid card for each qualifying competition listed below plus: ·                     From20 points for first place to 1 point for 20th place in each qualifying competition below: o        John Freedman Annual Medal o        Rex Bullock Shield o        Rex Cleaver Championship Trophy o        Annual Stableford Trophy o        Bailiff Shield o        Kethro Tray (if a singles qualifying competition) o        Autumn Singles Stableford Trophy o        Leo Picket 2 Clubs and a Putter The winner will be the golfer with the greatest number of points from a maximum of 6 of the above competitions. In the event of a tie, the trophy shall be shared.
Memorial Trophy	The trophy is awarded to the player who, in the Committee’s view, has achieved a significant improvement over the year.

 

 

Home Match v Leighton Buzzard - 6th June 2017

We entertained Leighton Buzzard on the Carthagena course on the 6^th of June. It rained and rained. Trolleys were blown over and umbrellas destroyed. After 8 holes of non stop heavy rain and wind, both teams were content to call it a day and make for the clubhouse. Marcus was able to bring lunch forward from 2.30 pm to just after noon so the teams didn’t have to wait around for too long. We hope to rearrange the match for the 4^th of July when Michael said we could again be accommodated on the Carthagena.

Away Match v Saffron Walden - 31st May 2017

Saffron Walden made up for their 6/2 defeat on the Gaunt in our first game of the season with a 5.5 to 2.5 win on their course.The Match was played on a perfect sunny day and perhaps some of JOG players were a tad jaded from playing at home the day before. Fred and myself having lost in the home leg when 4 up at the turn managed to restore some pride with a 6/5 victory to join Colin Newbury and David Crosby as the only winners albeit Bob Anderson hit a great shot on the 18^th to ensure a halve for he and Peter Jarman.

Nick Seeley and Neil Pinnington lost their unbeaten record this season despite Nick being just one over par after 8 holes their match was all square but they couldn’t contain their opposition over the closing holes. Pat Gillgallon announced at the introductions that he had never lost to Chris Knight (still celebrating his golden wedding at the weekend) but he has now, he and Bill Walker were narrowly beaten! Although Neil Pinnington won the nearest pin prize for our team he even lost that hole to a two from Alan Seymour which rather summed up the day.

Roast Gammon for lunch was followed by a selection of desserts which included cheese and biscuits and was enjoyed by all.

Home Match v South Beds - 30th May 2017

This year's home match against South Beds Vets was held in mainly sunny weather with only a short shower to hamper progress late in the round. The match was played from white tees on the Carthagena course which was in excellent condition and received good comments from S.Beds players. 

There were some very close matches with half of them being decided on the 18th green. Fred Williams and Nick Seeley halved when the opposition sank a 15 foot putt for a par and Nick's putt stopped on the edge of the hole, I reckon  at least half of the ball was hanging over the hole, but it did not drop. Keith Fuller and Ray Smart also halved their match.

The immediate past Captain and the Captain of Vice (Jims Peacock & Kerr) lost by 1 hole while Brian Bullen and Bill Walker won by 1 hole to even things up. There were good wins for Bob Anderson & Terry McSweeney (6&5), Gerry Gentle & Mike Newstead (4&3) and John Ellary & Chris Roy (also 4&3). The remaining match was a 4&2 loss by Malcolm Falconer and Bernard Gurney. The final result was a fine 5-3 win for John o' Gaunt seniors. The JoG nearest the pin prize was won by Bill Walker. 

The away match is Wednesday 20th September, unfortunately a 12:00 start due to S.Beds constraints. Unfortunately Fred will be on holiday so I will have the pleasure of Jim Kerr's company for the re-match. 

If anyone has any jokes for Fred, please let him know, the Thailand lottery joke is now past it's sell by date!

Goodbye to Steve Akrill

Steve Akrill who has been involved with the Clubs Junior Section for many years, the majority of which as Junior Organiser will be moving to Yorkshire in early June. Below is Steve with some of the successful Juniors in their Under 14 Cup on 30th May.

Away Match v East Herts - 23rd May 2017

The away match against East Herts “The Stags” was played in sunny conditions with the course in good condition and was enjoyed by all. The Stags lost only 3 home matches last year and so it was good to record a 5.5 to 2.5 victory which their 2016 club captain Alan Thomas described as a rout!

Several matches went to the last hole for wins or draws. We enjoyed a 2 tee start from the 1^st and 7^th holes, 4 matches off each tee which enabled all to be back in the clubhouse in good time for a nice lunch. Phil White made his first appearance for the team this season and he joined immediate past seniors captain Jim Peacock in a good win (3/2). Good wins also for Captain Fred and Organiser Keith Hargreaves (2/1) despite Keith being in serious discomfort with a bad back. Wins for Steve Foster and Keith Fuller (1 up), Steve Collins and Brian Bullen (3/1) and for Nick Seeley and Colin Fox (2/1) with Neil Pinnington and Malcolm Lee managing to secure a half on their last hole with a long putt from Malcolm so well done the team for reversing a 5/3 loss in the fixture last year.

The Ken Robinson Scramble - 16th May 2017

The Ken Robinson Scramble was played on the Carthegena Course on the 16^th May in sunny and humid conditions which was a window of nice weather in a week forecast with rain. The competition was played to a slightly different format than usual but the pace of play was generally very good although there were mixed reports about the format which was not enjoyed by all.

There were 80 entrants and some very strong teams which was reflected in the scoring. The section were able to welcome some virgin seniors to the competition Colman O’ Toole, Phil  Cottier and Anthony Bell.

In 4^th place and just outside the prizes by 0.1 were Graham McKay, George Turner, Harry Wakefield and Phil White

In 3^rd place with a gross 64 and nett 57.2 was Alan Curtis (who couldn’t stay for the presentation)Colin Fox David Gauge and Dave Henderson(recovered from recent ill health and back to his chirpy self).

In 2^nd place with a gross 62 and nett 55.5 were the OBE’s (over bloody eighty)pairing of Alan Fowler and Robin Smith both doyens of the club and still playing excellent golf with David Lincoln and John Ellary.

However in 1^st place  with another impressive gross score of 61 and nett 55 was Derek Page, Steve Cooper (also restored to health after a heart scare) Steve Ackrill (playing in his last seniors competition before moving to pastures new up north) and our blogspot organiser and seniors photographer Algy Grimes. Algy putted like a demon or perhaps like Gerry Gentle did last year when his team won.
