Brocket Hall is always one of our most popular away matches and competition for the limited number of available places is fierce.
In keeping with the quality venue, we sent (on paper) a formidable team.
Greeted with bacon rolls and coffee and a more manageable temperature in the low twenties there could not have been a more pleasant start.
The first pair out - Captain David Barlow and organiser Terry Domagala - soon found out why Brocket very rarely lose at home. Starting with a par-birdie-birdie the scene was set! With the Brocket stand-in captain Mike Haberfield playing off 20.6 and regularly out driving the rest of the group by 15-20 yards, the JOG pair found it difficult to find a way in.
Five down at the turn (should have been six apart
from a very generous gimme), they were fortunate to hang on till the 13th
before losing heavily 6-5.
With the
second pair of Jed Isbell and Steve Luckman losing 4-2 and the third pair of
Dave Wood and Paul Dobson getting spanked 7-5! things were not looking good.
Warren
Churms and Steve Mathers, followed by Roy Brown and Paul Jones both came in
with 2-1 losses, so it was down to a brave effort by the last pair of Paul Hammond
and Peter Imray to salvage a half despite being three down after 12.
With the
final result a loss of 5½ to 1/2 .
For
dinner we were treated to Macaroni cheese and pulled pork followed by a rhubarb
flan with ice cream.
