Seniors home match vs Wellingborough, April 15 2025

Seniors Captain Tony Lloyd and Organiser Neil Pinnington with their Wellingborough opponents

Organiser Neil Pinnington reports

Following weeks of blue sky and sunshine, it was very disappointing for all concerned to arrive at the club on a dull and dank morning. The Roll up had been instructed to depart earlier in the morning to ensure they would be well clear of the tee by our scheduled start time of 0930. Groups were sent out as soon as possible and we watched the last of the Roll up leaving the first in good time with umbrellas up and full wet suits on. Unfortunately, one or two had “not got the memo” and turned up after the rest of the roll up had departed so had to make alternative arrangements starting on the tenth.

More or less at 0930 The Captain and I were standing on the first tee full of ambition. We soon learnt that this might have been misplaced when their Captain nearly drove the first green, chipped up close and sank the putt for his birdie. Indeed, it is perhaps kinder to draw a veil over what happened during the rest of the game. Suffice it to say that we did not secure a win for our team.

In the second match, David Barlow and Chris Roy came up against some stern opposition. Despite playing well themselves, they had to concede they were beaten by a better team.

Sitting in the bar afterwards their Captain was feeling quite upbeat as he was sitting on a 2-0 lead while waiting some time for the other results to be reported. Happily, in good Ryder cup tradition I had loaded the middle order with what were obviously very strong teams. The next four matches went our way. Honours were shared in matches 7 and 8.

Nearest the pin winner for John O'Gaunt was Neil Pinnington.

Special mention also for Alban Macdonald who, while playing the 8th, holed out from the cinder path by the 9th tee square to make par.

Details are shown below but the final score was a 5-3 win for John O Gaunt.

We look forward to the return fixture in August, when I am sure Wellingborough will be out for revenge.

Editor's note: Neil has redacted our score to spare my blushes. In the spirit of full disclosure, the phrase "dog licence" springs to mind!
