Away Match v Bedford and County - 26th March 2019

Our first away fixture against Bedford and County was played in fine weather with a light breeze however cool it was to the skin.

I was playing with John Ellary against a pair of superior golfers, Frank off 12 and Ron off 6. This did mean we were receiving shots, quite a few, although the ball from our opponents was still in the air as it passed our drives. Our only hope was to gel together and hope our opponents were affected by there recent golfing break to South Africa.

Somehow we built an early lead and were two up after five holes, and we managed to get to that stage where at least one of us played the hole well.

We approached the final hole one to the good, and all but me were on the green for three, me four, but all putting before me had problems, our opponents down for five, me to putt for a half. This was probably my best moment of the season as I holed from about fifteen feet to half the hole and therefore win our match.

This fighting spirit was not matched by the remainder of the team and unfortunately we lost 6-2, in spite of my vice captain achieving an eagle on his way to an honourable defeat.

As usual the hospitality was excellent, as was the meal, and we left sustained if not victorious.

Bill Walker takes charge of the next match against Wellingborough and I wish him and his team well against another set of difficult opponents.

Home Match v Saffron Walden - 18th March 2019

After the dreadful storms, that had seemed to have no rest bite, we had our first yearly fixture against Saffron Walden. The weather was kind and could say “sub tropical” .... A morning full of promise.

This promise never materialised in the golf however as 3 of the first 4 drives in match 1 failed to exceed 100 yards in length, whereas 2 didn’t make the fairway. Bring back the wind and rain. Our match was probably, the toughest and tightest, I have ever played in. Captain Dave and myself found ourselves 2 down through 6.
We were both playing well, but our opponents seemed to be able to putt from anywhere on the green. But captain Dave and I, were level on the turn. We won the 12th to go 1 up, but succumb to losing hole 14, to go level again. So this is how it stayed, and on the 18th, where we all putting for a win, when Captain Dave, suggested should we agree to a respectable and honourable half. So we shook hands, and our guests whom were absolutely great company agreed.

The other matches, were also tight and going to the wire. Peter Jarman putted to victory on the 18th hole, to win by 1. Also Gerry Degaute Won their match on the 18th.

There were a couple of failures but overall we bought home a 5½ to 2½ victory. Sam Standen won the nearest pin so coupled with his win should have gone home happy.
We had a delightful meal, with homemade chicken and gammon pie, with seasoned vegetables, with bread and butter pudding for desert. So a big thank you to , Marcus, our chef, and his team.

Seniors 4BBB Trophy - 12th March 2019

On Tuesday March 12th we held our annual four ball better ball competition. I think it would be fair to say that the early starters had the best of the weather, having only gale force winds to contend with. Those of us starting a little later had the added pleasure of heavy rain to brighten our day. However 68 brave souls took to the fairways.

Ex Seniors Captain Fred Williams  won the nearest the pin competition, whilst the winners were Gordon Goodchild and Peter Jarman with 48 points narrowly beating Harry Wakefield and Clive Thompson who finished with 47 points.

Out of the 34 pairs that started 12 scored better than 40 points an admirable achievement considering the conditions.

Mixed Greensomes Competition (Seniors and Ladies Section) - 7th March 2019

A bright and sunny morning greeted the early starters in this competition although the temperatures were quite low. This bright start didn’t last long however, and it was not long before the cloud rolled in and the wind became brisk which did nothing to encourage high scoring.

In the conditions John O’Gaunt was playing long so keeping straight was the order of the day. In spite of the difficult conditions two pairs got to level par or better, so congratulations must go to our runners up Bill Burrows and Joan Cocksedge with 36 points and special praise to our winners Marion Cooper and Michael Newstead with 37 points.

Sue Lee won the ladies nearest the pin and Colin Smith won for the men.

Overall 40 pairs took part in the competition.
