Annual Stableford Trophy October 26 2022

Winner Keith Fuller receives the trophy from Seniors Captain Algy Grimes

The Annual Stableford Trophy, postponed this summer because of a high-temperature weather warning, was finally played with 59 of the original field competing on the John O’Gaunt course. The conditions were perfect, but the course was playing quite long with some entrants falling prey to the autumn leaves.

The winner, with 39 points, was Keith Fuller. In second place, with 36 points, was Peter Jarman and in third place, with 33 points, was Ian Simpson.

Close behind them on 32 points were Richard Cobb, David Streatfield and Richard Westergreen-Thorne.

The result also decides the Golfer of the Year competition with Barry Donovan coming out on top with 77 points. Although Barry failed to record a first place in any of the qualifying competitions, his sheer consistency paid off.

In second place was Rob Bage, on 62 points, followed by Richard Herbert, 59, Peter Imray, 58, and Richard Cobb, 52.

Second place: Peter Jarman

Barry Donovan, Golfer of the Year, is pictured winning his fourth place prize last year

Seniors v the Juniors, October 25, 2022

The Seniors meet some formidable opponents during the year, but rarely are they faced with such stiff opposition as John O’Gaunt’s very own juniors. Today was no exception.

A total  of five matches were played in good spirits on a fine October Tuesday. Conditions were very pleasant with the JOG Course looking as good as usual. The autumn leaves were giving most matches a bit of a problem but the greens staff were busy out there clearing them away.

Sue Lee welcomed everyone and thanked them for participating with a friendly smile on their faces, even if the Seniors were quietly grimacing to themselves!

The trophy, which has been played for since 1982, was won very convincingly by the Juniors, some of them a joy to watch. One of those Juniors was only 8 years old and what a game he had, remember the name, Albert Watts!

The Seniors Captain, Algy Grimes, announced the result as a whitewash defeat for the Seniors and presented the trophy to the Juniors  Vice Captain, Nathan Church.

Letter from Adrian Boyd

Adrian Boyd, who spent the summer with the seniors while on an extended break from his native Australia, has written this letter of thanks to Gordon McLeod and Richard Westergreen-Thorne.

Dear Gordon & Richard

Gordon – Thank you so much for introducing me to the Seniors Section and putting me in contact with Richard.

As a “Country Member” resident in Australia you understood that I probably didn’t know many members despite having been a member since the early 1980’s!!

The introduction to the Seniors Section and in particular the Tuesday & Thursday Roll-Ups has worked really well for me and meant that I have had the opportunity to play with many people in a friendly and somewhat competitive (well we do play for who pays for the tea afterwards!!) game.

Richard – Thank you for welcoming me to the Seniors Section and managing the introductions etc..  I can honestly say that the Seniors Section at JOG is extremely well run and organised and the communication via emails, blogs etc has helped me keep in touch with all that is happening or has happened.

I am back in Melbourne Australia now and looking forward to meeting up with my Aussie golfbuddies

My wife and I are already planning a return to UK next year to see our relations and in particular our two growing granddaughters (ages 8 & 6).  Until then thanks to you both.  Richard please thank your team from me.

At JOG the Seniors labelled me “The Aussie” and now back here I am “That Bl**dy Pom”.   Not sure I can really win……but I love the banter and it makes the game so much fun!!

Best regards, Adrian Boyd

Gordon Percival Team Trophy October 11 2022

Seniors Captain Algy Grimes presents the Gordon Percival Team Trophy to Clive Bassindale whose hidden team included George Burnham and James Stirling

What a difference a week makes… not to mention a full set of clubs!

Last Tuesday, with only three clubs and a putter, the winning score was 41 and 19 players scored 36 points or more.

But with all the clubs back in the bag and a glorious Autumn day on the John O’Gaunt course providing perfect golfing conditions, the scoring was noticeably lower.

That said, Chris Roy came in with an impressive 39 points to win the Martin Ives Shield for best individual score. Just behind him were John Sandland on 38 and Graham Lewis on 37. Only one other player, Barry Donovan, scored 36 points.

The Gordon Percival Team Trophy was won by Gorge Burnham, Clive Bassindale and James Stirling with a combined total of 100 points.

In joint second place, with 99 points, were Christopher Walker, Chris Roy and Fred Williams, alongside Richard Young, Stephen Collins and Bill Conway.

Raffle prizes were won by Gavin Little, Trevor Darrington, Robert Isaacson and Colin Newbury.

Chris Roy: winner of the Martin Ives Shield for best individual score of 39 points

Graham Lewis: third best individual score of 37 points

Three Clubs and a Putter, October 4, 2022

Seniors Captain Algy Grimes presents winner Philip Armstrong with the trophy

The Seniors proved once again that you don’t need a full set of clubs to record a good score.

Out of 66 entrants in the Three Clubs and a Putter Stableford, 19 players scored 36 points or more.

The day was also marked by two holes-in-one, by Andrew Bowen on the Carthagena 2nd and John Church on the 11th.

The winner, with 41 points, was Philip Armstrong, who achieved his win with driver, seven iron and gap wedge.

Three players returned a score of 40, with second and third place on countback going to John Church and Chris Saunders. Commiserations to Ralph Black who was just pipped to a podium place.

Second place: John Church with Algy
