You may have noticed that the gorse on top of the wall on the Carthagena 16th hole has been removed in an attempt to end the confusion over when you can claim a free drop.
For clarification, the wall and path are immoveable obstructions (Rule 16.1a) and if either interferes with your stance or swing you can claim free relief.
How to take relief: Find the nearest point of complete relief, drop your ball within one club length of that spot, no closer to the hole.
Send your shot soaring toward the green for par or, better still, birdie. Simple!
However, please note that if the ball lies in the remaining gorse and a stroke cannot be made due to the gorse itself, free relief is not available, even if the wall or path is also interfering.
So now you know!
