Seniors at home to Wellingborough, April 5 2022

Organiser Neil Pinnington reports on JoG Seniors’ first win of the season

After a slightly delayed start waiting for the roll-up to clear, the Seniors Captain and I set out to defend the honour of John of Gaunt against their Seniors Captain and partner David. We raced into an early lead only to be pulled back. In the end we required the good offices of their Senior Captain in losing his ball on the final hole (a stroke hole for him) to allow Algy to sneak a win on the hole and claim a half. All agreed it had been a very enjoyable match and (begrudgingly) that had been the fair result.

The rest of the team fared much better. Special mention is due to Andy Brown and Ray Smart, winning 7&5. The opposition were so impressed - they even recorded on the scorecard what a very good player Andy is! The same can be said of Sam Standen who returned refreshed from his holiday in such sparkling form that he and Jonathan Lean recorded a 7&5 win. Congratulations to both teams.

They  were superbly supported by the teams of  Barry Donovan & Paul Jones, Chris Roy & Phil Armstrong, and Dave Wilsher & Richard Westergreen-Thorne who all recorded wins.

I incurred Rob Anderson's wrath by sending he and Brian Bullen out with the same 30 Handicap golfer he had played against before ("19 Shots!!"). However after the event he did concede that it had been an enjoyable match ending all square.

Commiserations to Trevor Darrington and David Streatfield. Apparently, in the final holes they were hit with a barrage of amazing  chips and long putts being holed out.  Their commanding lead was hauled back only to lose on the final green.

The final result , a fabulous 6-2 win for John O'Gaunt. This will serve as a benchmark to be matched or beaten in future matches. It is even more satisfying considering that in the equivalent 2019 fixture we lost 6-2.

I believe all matches were played in the best of spirits. We received fulsome praise for the state of the course and the greens from many of the Wellingborough players (whilst bemoaning the current state of their course). Even so, we look forward with anticipation to the return match at Wellingborough on August 8th
