An overcast Thursday morning with predictions of heavy rain saw the Jog Seniors' team at Bourn GC ready to take revenge for the home defeat earlier this year.
Captain Fred was speechless, due to a throat infection (known medically as Guinness throat). So Vice Captain Jim gave a stirring pre-match talk ending in "lets beat these b*gg**s". In the event the sun shone down all day onto a pristine course and we lost 6 games to 2. What a surprise!
The one positive effect of the Vice Captain's stirring talk was the JoG winner of nearest the pin. namely, Vice Captain Jim.
As if to comment on the result, the heavens opened during the post match lunch making a superb meal (red meat and plenty of it) in the dry of the conservatory a fitting end to a very enjoyable day, but we must do better!!

Seniors Section Annual Stableford Trophy - 25th July 2017
The Annual Stableford Trophy was played on the John O’ Gaunt
course in fine sunny weather and 82 players competed .
Just outside the prizes were Malcolm Falconer off 9 and
Richard Westergreen-Thorne off 19 in 5th and 4th place
both with 35 points.
In 3rd place was Michael Newstead off 19 with 36
points.
In 2nd place was Richard Cobb off 23 with 37
points but the winner off 12 was Peter Imray with an exceptional 41 points
which meant a cut of one shot for the competition win and a further one shot
for exceptional scoring.
The raffle raised £200 for the senior captains charity.
Vice captain Jim Kerr made the presentation on behalf of the
captain who had lost his voice following a trip to Dublin.
Phil White was singled out for thanks for organising the
competition and his wife Jackie for helping with the raffle. Bill Burrows was
thanked for his help with the score cards in the absence of seniors secretary
David Crosby with an ankle injury which prevented his attendance .

Home Match v Gog Magog Elders - 18th July 2017
The home match against Gog Magog Elders was close and hard
fought on the Carthegena Course on a fine day. Steve Foster had a hot putter and
managed a couple of birdies including a put from 20 foot on the 18th
green to secure a half.
There were also halves from Brian Bullen and Peter Wade and
Malcolm Falconer and Peter Imray as many matches went to the wire.
However very good wins for Bob Anderson and Nick Seeley 3/2
and Derek Young and Chris Roy 2up left the pairing of vice captain Jim Kerr and
Steve Collins to seal the win with a 3/1 giving a final match score 4.5/3.5.
One of the visitors Henry McTrusty managed to hit a 7 wood
tee shot on the par 3 second hole onto the green whilst losing the club
head into trees to the left of the green. A trick shot that required a 10 min
search to find the club head.
Malcolm Falconer pipped Chris Roy for the nearest pin prize
on the 8th hole.
Roast Pork followed by Spotted Dick and custard was enjoyed
by all.

Reg Batson Medal Trophy - 11th July 2017
After a long dry spell 33 seniors competed for the
aggregate Trophy on the old course under grey clouds and the threat of much
needed rain (for the course not the golfers!) Only the early starters managed to
avoid getting wet.
In 4th place on countback with a nett 74 was
Richard Westergreen-Thorne (19) in 3rd place was Paul Stallard
(22). In second place with an impressive nett 72 and playing off (9) was
Malcolm Falconer with a gross 81.
The winner was Paul R Jeeves (18) with an excellent 71.
There were no handicap adjustments.
A couple of noteworthy players being, Phil White the lowest
handicap player (5) who played the wrong ball and had to be disqualified from
the competition and as Colin Fox might have observed “Should have gone to Specsavers!”.
Winner Paul Jeeves |
Second Malcolm Falconer |
Third Paul Stallard |
Finally, Alban MacDonald who came 11th off (12) had a very good round but came to grief on the par 3, 4th hole,
when he went into a greenside bunker where the rake had been left parallel to
the face of the bunker where the ball was trapped causing Alban to eventually
take 10! Alban wryly quipped to his playing partners “Anybody got a Hamlet?”
Comment from Alban - Not that I have any sour feelings but the rake in that bunker cost me the game... I'd probably got down for max 4 and would have taken first place with Net 70!!!. So it would be nice to think we might learn from this and all try to do our best to care for the course and in doing so observe the correct etiquette. If all players replacing the rake in bunkers consider the impact of a ball coming to rest adjacent to the rake and replace the rake such that it causes minimal problems to players following - that would be wonderful. I'd also make a plea that if players see a rake placed badly in a bunker then please replace it correctly as you pass... Alban Macdonald

Home Match v Leighton Buzzard (Replay) - 4th July 2017
Peter Dean the match organiser
led our pairing to a 2/1 victory with Peter scoring a nett 68 (he kept his score
despite the match play format). There was a half
for Phil White and Malcolm Lee and wins for Alban MacDonald and Richard
Westergreen-Thorne 1 up and Malcolm Falconer and Colin Fox 5/3 with Colin Fox also
having a memorable round not missing a fairway and with a “hot” putter.
Fred Williams - Captain of Senior Section
Richard WT won nearest pin and
everyone enjoyed the hot and cold buffet followed by summer fruit tart. The
opposition really enjoyed the lunch and all went well.
