Seniors Captain Tony Lloyd and organiser Algy Grimes with their Northampton opponents
Organiser Algy Grimes reports
A later start than usual for this match to give the opponents from Northampton an easier journey for a meeting time of 9.45am also gave the home side a lie in!
Team introductions followed the usual coffee and biscuits and, looking at the team sheet, it was unusual for the JOG team to have more shots than our opponents. Could we repeat our win away given home advantage on the Carthagena course?
In the first set of pairings, Captain Tony and I had a total of 28 shots to Northampton’s one! Given Tony’s recent run of form we were very hopeful, so on the first we managed a half despite their par.
On the second we went one up with Tony’s net par. But our confidence was short lived due to the first of three birdies by their Captain on the fourth to bring it all square.
Then, although we had a combined three shots on the fifth, we couldn’t match their par, so we were one down.
On the sixth, surprisingly, I managed a sandy par to match their par; the next two holes were halved and then along came the second birdie on the ninth for them to be 2 up at the turn.
On the tenth I managed a par but lost it to the third birdie - so now three down.
Again a par on the twelfth put us four down. Both Tony and I had shots on the thirteenth; I said to Tony we have to win this one; we did thanks to my net birdie taking us back to three down.
This was followed by two net birdies from yours truly, we won fifteen and sixteen bringing us back to 1 down. Game on we thought, however we could only manage to halve the next two holes so it came down to their last putt on eighteen for par taking the win.
It is worth noting we had a net 70 for the round compared to their net 69, it was a very nail biting finish to a great round.
Match two saw Peter Imray paired with Jack Shepherd, I thought who will beat that pairing? Again a close match, despite Peter making a birdie 3 on the seventh (stroke index 1) he lost the hole to a net eagle, ouch! Having shot a gross 71 and lose was a bit hard to take for the home team. They lost 2 & 1.
When the third pairing was playing the thirteenth, a van drove down Carthagena Road, on its side was the sign “A Clean Pair of Heals from Northampton”. What can we say?!
Dave Wood was being very patriotic by flying the Union Jack flag on his glove, but that didn’t help their scores.
It wasn’t all bad news. We won the fifth and sixth matches and the eighth, awaiting the result of the seventh we had hopes of a drawn match. However it was not to be. Well done to those that did win.
The JOG nearest the pin was won by the only person to be on the green, Steve Luckman.
Unfortunately due to the later start we had a long wait for all players to arrive in the club ready for lunch, but once there everyone enjoyed the Lasagne and Chips followed by a Sweet Apple and Cherry Oat tart with custard.
The results were;
Tony Lloyd and Algy Grimes – Lost 1 down
Peter Imray and Jack Shepherd – Lost 2 & 1
Rob Ebsworth and Neil Pinnington – Lost 4 & 3
Dave Wood and Paul Dobson – Lost 2 & 1
Jed Isbell and Gavin Little – WON 2 & 1
Trevor Darrington and Graham Gadsden – WON 4 & 3
Barry Donovan and Paul Jones – Lost 1 down
Steve Luckman and Michael Newstead – WON 4 & 3
An overall loss 5 - 3
Tally so far this year for JOG
